Marketing is killing vintage

But when you see exorbitant prices (an a lot of advertisements) warning bells should be going off somewhere in your head. The Toi et Moi Ring; Empress Josephine's engagement ring

So I was looking at examples of Josephine Bonaparte's (yes that Bonaparte) engagement ring and was struck by the fact that is in a particular French style known as Toi et Moi or me and you. So I had to put these in here. They are far too gorgeous not to share.

Old Diamonds: rose and candlelight cuts

Rose cut diamond earrings and Memento Mori Diamond Bracelet Before the opening of the DeBeers mine in South Africa in the late 1800's diamonds were incredibly rare. Even after the mine came online diamonds did not exist in sufficient quantities to meet the demand created by their insanely successful advertising campaign. The result was that many pieces of jewelry had diamonds that we would consider low quality. Diamonds from that time were also cut to reflect candle light (old mine cut, rose cut). This gives them a more a warm flicker instead of the blinding sparkle which is, in its own way, beautiful. The two pieces above are from the Georgian era (think Pride and Prejudice.) These pieces have a romance all their own. While many are 200 years old and may not survive being worn every day they are still stunning and can be used as occasion jewelry.
